What type of cosmetic changes can porcelain veneers make?Porcelain veneers (porcelain laminates) can often be an effective method by which to make cosmetic changes in teeth that are chipped, worn, stained, crooked, or discolored. Please note that case selection is an extremely important factor in the success of this technique. Porcelain veneers cannot be utilized in every situation. Only an examination by your dentist can determine if porcelain veneers are an appropriate method by which to make the changes you desire. Even if you find that porcelain veneers are not appropriate for your circumstances, your dentist will most likely be able to suggest other treatment options that are suitable. For examples of how porcelain veneers might be utilized in real life cases, see our Cosmetic Dentistry section. |

To get started, make an examination appointment with your dentist. Before your dentist can begin the process of making your porcelain veneers they must first evaluate and document the present condition of your teeth. As a part of this examination your dentist may need to take x-rays as well as photographs. Your dentist may also need to take dental impressions (dental molds) from which they will make a plaster cast of your mouth.During the examination appointment you will need to convey to your dentist the types of changes you are interested in obtaining. Your dentist in turn will help you understand to what extent the changes you desire are possible. As a way of more precisely communicating with you, some dentists will retouch the plaster casts they have made of your teeth so to allow you to visualize the shape changes they anticipate your new veneers will be able to make. Other dentists will have computer imaging systems which allow them to illustrate on screen how they expect your new veneers will change the appearance of your smile. |
